Establishment of the PolyU Research Institute of Smart Ageing

The PolyU Research Institute for Smart Ageing (RISA) adopts an interdisciplinary approach to ageing research, focusing on innovative solutions for the challenges faced by the ageing population, and aims to improve the quality of life for older adults and promote active and healthy ageing. RISA comprises over 45 members from 15 academic departments and units at PolyU, covering a wide range of ageing-related issues such as medical conditions and daily living needs.

Enabling Digital Transformation in the Healthcare Industry

The institute is committed to moving forward with the United Nations Decade of Healthy Ageing and supporting startups driving the development of gerontech. A significant part of this mission involves 2025 Smart Ageing Tech – Enabling Digital Transformation in the Healthcare Industry, which promotes an innovative approach to monitoring the health of the elderly.

By driving impactful research and innovation, the institute has fostered several game-changing discoveries. Key projects include AI-Assisted Design of functional clothing enhances scoliosis treatment and the power of 3D printing to create titanium alloy. Furthermore, researchers are driving translational vision research and engaging in interdisciplinary efforts to drive Chinese medicine development. The International Ph.D. Program in Gerontology and Long-Term Care serves to further these academic goals.
