Comprehensive Overview of Telephone Reassurance Programs for Seniors and Disabled Adults
Always in Touch is a complimentary telephone reassurance program that provides companionship to seniors and disabled adults. This program offers daily check-ins or weekly socialization calls providing a sense of security that the senior is not alone. It is designed to help older adults socialize and remain connected while staying at home.
Program Eligibility and Enrollment
Individuals may refer themselves or be referred by a caregiver, medical professional, family member, or service provider. Always in Touch serves seniors or disabled adults who are isolated, living alone, or in need of daily contact. This may be temporary while recuperating from an illness or surgery, or it may be a more permanent situation. Married couples are also eligible for Always in Touch. For those participating in the Phone Pals program, a volunteer will call 1-3 times a week to have a friendly conversation, and participants are paired with trained volunteers based on similar interests.
Key Service Features
The following table outlines the specific features of various telephone reassurance initiatives:

The Vital Role of Volunteers
The Telephone Reassurance Program is the core component of older adult services. We connect trained volunteers with homebound older adults, fostering relationships and working to prevent loneliness and the effects of social isolation through weekly phone calls. Volunteers play a vital role for our clients’ social workers as well, as they become advocates and another voice for their clients’ concerns and health needs. Specifically, volunteers make personalized weekday calls to older adults who are homebound, providing social contact while also listening for signals indicating the need for additional support.
Volunteer Perks and Training
- Volunteer from the comfort and convenience of your home!
- Flexible schedule and time commitment.
- Great opportunity for socializing, networking, and engaging with your community.
- Virtual training provided.
Detailed training is provided for all volunteers before they begin, as well as regular support and check-ins during their time volunteering.
Building Connections and Bridging Generations
Beyond phone calls, organizations are focused on building connections and bridging generations. Through a variety of intergenerational programs, we offer opportunities for neighbors of all ages to come together, learn from each other, and engage in community. One such example is the 3G Mentoring Program: founded by the creators of Sesame Street, 3G brings Kindergarteners, High Schoolers and Older Adults together to engage in joyous, meaningful experiences that create bonds, develop skills, and expand perspectives. Clients of the program also receive updates about social services in the community and may attend in-person community events for volunteers and clients.
Important Considerations
Always in Touch is not a referral service or medical alert service, nor is it a substitute for professional medical advice or for the care that patients receive from their physicians and medical advisors. In the event of a medical emergency, you must call your doctor or 911 immediately. Clients should also note that message and data rates may apply regarding digital communications and that message frequency may vary.
