iPhone was the most used smartphone in 2019 to access pornography

Nowadays technology is in the hands of people, few people nowadays stay on desktop or portable computers to access pornography. The annual review of website data “Pornhub” revealed that 76,6% of users consume a obscenity through your phones. This represents a 5% increase compared to 71,6% in 2018.

iOS vs. Android Market Share

Android is the most popular mobile platform in the world, but Pornhub's stats paint a different picture. The most popular mobile platform for Pornhub in 2019 wasn't Android. The adult streaming service revealed that iOS accounted for 52.8% of all mobile traffic in 2019. Meanwhile, Android accounted for 46.6% of traffic this year. In fact, Pornhub said Android traffic dropped by 14% compared to 2018, while iOS traffic rose by 19%.

With that, the apple stole the historical leadership of the Android. Android kept the lead until 2018, when it had 54,4% of the share against 44,4% of iOS. The reasons Apple's smartphones have become a majority among visitors to the Pornhub may be linked to offering lower priced models than in the past like iPhone XR and iPhone 11.

Platform Traffic Share (2019) YoY Growth/Change
iOS 52.8% +19%
Android 46.6% -14%

The Impact of Geography and Government Blocking

So what’s the reason for this massive change, then? “A closer look revealed that much of this change had to do with geography,” the company explained on its Insights blog. Android based devices are quite popular in India, so when India’s traffic decreased in 2019, it caused the share of Android devices to decrease. India’s traffic drop was quite significant by Pornhub’s own figures, going from number three in 2018 to number 15 this year. Pornhub suggested that this drop was due to the Indian government blocking access to some porn websites.

Mobile Browser Performance

Google Chrome was just ahead of Apple when it came to mobile browser traffic though, accounting for 44.3% of traffic compared to Safari’s 41.6%. The browser race is much closer on mobile, where Chrome has only a 2,7% advantage over Safari. Both Google and Apple’s browsers rose to the occasion at the expense of UC Browser and Opera.

Samsung’s browser continued its upward trajectory too, now accounting for 6.2% of mobile traffic. This is due to 28% year-on-year growth compared to last year, and 69% growth from 2017 to 2018.

Gaming Consoles and Live Events

The adult streaming service also looked at the most popular gaming platforms used for Pornhub viewing. It found that PlayStation consoles were in first place with 51.5% of the traffic, followed by the Xbox brand at 34.7%. PlayStation traffic dropped 5.2% year-on-year, while Microsoft’s platforms grew 5.3%.

In a bizarre turn of events, the ill-fated PlayStation Vita handheld continues to grow its market-share, going from 7.3% of gaming traffic in 2018 to 9.1% this year. Another rather interesting statistic is that the biggest TV/broadcast-related influence on Pornhub traffic was the iPhone 11 launch event. “The Apple Special Event is streamed live every fall and always causes a big traffic drop on Pornhub,” the website explained. This year worldwide iOS traffic dropped by 15% as the new iPhone 11 variants were revealed.
